FantasyDraftEdge.com Take

This is more about a lack of competition than a glowing endorsement of Stafford. If the #1 overall draft pick can’t beat out Dante Culpepper and Drew Stanton for the job you didn’t draft very well. We’ve expected all along that this is Stafford’s job to lose.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Cleveland Browns received two substantial offers for QB Brady Quinn but turned both offers down.

Defining substantial is of course subjective but it seems clear the Browns have confidence in Brady Quinn.

*** The FantasyDraftEdge.com Fantasy Impact Take ***

We aren’t yet convinced Brady Quinn is a solid fantasy football QB at this point but he does have some solid weapons around him and with a solid offensive line and some time to through Quinn may break through and find himself moving up our fantasy football cheat sheets!

Always need to take Spring mini camps with a grain of salt but ESPN.com is reporting that Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell is in much better shape than a year ago. Additionally in early May practices Russell looked strong throwing an impressive deep ball – something the Raiders didn’t do much last year.

*** The FantasyDraftEdge.com Fantasy Impact Take ***

Our stance here is certainly wait and see – as it often is this time of year – particularly with Russell. We’ve never believed too strongly that JaMarcus Russell would be a solid NFL fantasy football quarterback. We’ll admit we’re wrong if in fact some new weapons and increased experience lets Russell realize the talent that made him the #1 overall pick. Until we see it with some very impressive numbers in the pre-season the Raiders QB stays low on our cheat sheet player rankings.

Reports from the New York Daily News indicate that Mark Sanchez may not need to do much too win the starting job out of pre-season for the Jets. Although it has not been said in so many words the Jets really seem to want Sanchez to be the guy on opening day. So unless Kellen Clemens is simply outstanding in pre-season and Sanchez tanks early on the NY Jets will have a rookie QB under center when the season starts.

*** The FantasyDraftEdge.com Fantasy Impact Take ***

We’ve had a long standing opinion that relying on a rookie QB in the NFL to be your #1 fantasy football starting quarterback is not a great strategy. Last year may have hurt that view point a bit with Flacco and Ryan both putting up respectable numbers. However, we still have serious concerns about taking a rookie QB too early in the draft. For most of our clients this problem works itself out as high profile rookies are often taken WAY too early in drafts and our clients know better than to reach.

As always we’ll be watching all rookies closely in the pre-season but also as always don’t expect any rookie QB to be too highly rated on our fantasy cheat sheets.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised – but the Brett Favre returning stories are back…reports have him talking to the Vikings. Of course, reports at the same time insist he’s not talking to anyone. It seems the Vikings are the only possible team that may interest Favre at this point. Maybe this is why the story even exist – the Vikings were the team he really wanted to go to last season during all the drama. Two reasons – he can “stick it” to the Packers; twice head-to-head and by winning the division and because the Vikings may simply be a QB away from a deep playoff run.
Don’t expect this story to die down anytime soon – especially when other news remains thin in May.

*** The FantasyDraftEdge.com Fantasy Impact Take ***

If Brett Favre does return with some weapons around him he may be a viable #1 fantasy football QB. He certainly was 2 seasons ago when winning with Green Bay and early last season as the Jets were winning games. But as soon as things started to break down Favre showed his longtime weakness – just throwing the ball up for grabs like we’re playing pickup games in the backyard. Favre is far removed from being an elite fantasy QB but in Minnesota he’d be a middle of the pack ranked QB on our cheat sheets most likely.
